Counseling – Ivan Kozin
The University of California Santa Barbara is excited to bring the Transfer – Making It Happen (TMIH) program to Channel Islands High School. TMIH is a comprehensive program designed to help CIHS
Seniors, who do not currently meet the 4-year college admissions standards, prepare for pathways toward a four-year university degree. The TMIH program will include workshops that provide a broad understanding of higher education. Topics will include, but are not limited to, the value of a four-year degree, degree options, choosing a university, application processes, financial aid, transition issues, choosing a major, graduation, as well as post-secondary education options. Field trips to Oxnard College, CSU Channel Island, and UC Santa Barbara are also scheduled. Only 40 seniors who selected based by GPA and recommendations are participating in the program. The students are excited and motivated to start the next chapter in their educational lives.

On Wednesday, October 14, nearly 200 Raiders endured the early morning rainfall and made the trip to Oxnard College to participate in Multicultural Day 2009. CIHS Raiders filled the workshops and truly represented the school’s best. With the assistance and support of Mr. Terrazas, Mr. Napoles and the CIHS counseling department, students were treated to a day of educational lectures, ethnic performances, exotic foods, and a career faire just to name a few highlights of the day. As always, Oxnard College catered to the needs of our students and ensured that each student understood the significance of higher education, as well as the importance of embracing the cultural differences of today’s society.

Here are few of the workshops the Raiders were treated to:

Art Presentation with Christine Morla
The ancient art of Origami with Professor Kojima
FREE Money with Linda Robison & Brandi Rieger
The Last Disciples Comic Book with Michael Williams
A Talk About Human Slavery with Dorjee Tsewang
Multicultural Foods with Culinary Arts
Ballet Folklorico with Mati Sanchez
The Life of a Camera Person with Mark Sawicki
Broadcast Industry Opportunities with Andres Orozco
Introduction to Automotive with Jeff Hiben

Jackie Hamer – SPED Mentoring Day
On Thursday, October 22nd, Ms. Jackie Hamer took three students, Moises Lopez, Ismael Sanchez, and Alex Christopher, along with para-educator Quahtemoc Ochoa to attend the NAWCWD Point Mugu Mentoring Day for students with disabilities. This was a wonderful opportunity for three C.I.H.S. students interested in careers related to engineering, computer science, graphic arts and/or electronics to “see what it’s like to work ‘Behind the Gate’ at Point Mugu!” Mentors took the students on individual tours of weapons design facilities, control rooms, etc. Students were able to see how missiles are tested, repaired and deployed. They were also given an opportunity to submit resumes for future jobs on the base. A great part of the event was that our students had the opportunity to job-shadow various professionals working in the fields in which these students are interested. This Mentoring Day opportunity was extended to select schools/students from throughout the county including Oxnard, Ventura, and Moorpark College, as well as to CSU’s Northridge and Channel Islands. Thanks to the application process completed by assistant principal, Mark Contreras, Channel Islands High School was the only high school to participate in this event. One lucky student will be selected to receive an internship from this event. For that student, a full college tuition will be made a reality. We would like to thank C.I.H.S. teacher Sandra Galvan for the student referrals, and we would like to thank Mrs. Rosa Martinez-Sotelo, a former student with a disability, now working as a liaison between Point Mugu, China Lake and people with disabilities.

HEW (Higher Education Week) is a consortium of community colleges/universities/organizations providing awareness, outreach, and recruitment to the under-represented, low income, and educationally disadvantaged students of Ventura County. This consortium is made up of over 15 representatives from all 4 systems of higher education and private organizations.

In our efforts promote a college-going culture at our campus, we held HEW (Higher Education Week) on Thursday, October 22, 2009. They talked to our 11th grade students during 1st period & our 12th grade students during 2nd period about post-secondary options such as the four systems of higher education, financial aid, and important deadlines.

After the short presentation, the students had an opportunity to visit the college fair and speak to different university representatives in the gymnasium. One of the university representatives complimented us on having the most prepared students asking the right questions than any other group they have seen this week. We also want to thank everybody involved in ensuring our gym was beautifully set-up and the equipment ready to run, also for coordinating and setting up the morning refreshments.

Some of the Institutions present today were: UCSB, UCLA, CSUCI, CSU Chico, CSU Riverside, Westmont
College, Point Loma Nazarene University, Brooks Institute, Devry University, FIDM, Marymount College, Oxnard College, and Santa Barbara City College.

Briana Davis – AP Government/Politics Class
On Monday, 10/19, Mr. David Richmond (the director of CA's “We the People” program) came to address the AP government and politics class in room 20. His topic: The power and history of the Executive Branch. He started off with a discussion of the American dream and then launched into a discussion of the history of Article II followed by the rise of presidential power throughout the years. The term "white space" was introduced to the AP students in preparing them to think about what Executive power means. Mr. Richmond came to motivate them in preparation for a Regional Competition on December 12th at the 9th Circuit Courthouse in Pasadena, CA.

Dennis McSweeney - Visual and Performing Arts
A drawing marathon was held on Oct 19 at the Carnegie Museum in downtown Oxnard and was organized by Donna Barna. Local artists and art teachers from OUHSD, including our own Nancy Cook and Virgil Cardinez, spent time drawing still lifes and costumed models. The event was open to the public and many people interested in the arts came to draw and watch the artists at work.

Consuelo Hernandez (Assistant Principal) 2009 PSAT/NMSQT
The PSAT/NMSQT test is the best preparation for the SAT. It measures critical reading, math problem-solving, and writing skills developed over many years, both in and out of school. It also gives grade 11 students a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools online. Channel Islands High School administered this exam to all English 9/10 Honors and 11th grade students on Wednesday, October 14, 2009.

I would like to give a special thanks to Ms. Shirley Moore for doing an exceptional job with organizing the administration for over 300 students and to Mrs. Adrianna Ipatzi for supporting with all areas of the PSAT. Additionally, Mr. Alberto Chavez, Mr. Sam Cvijanovich, Mr. Mark Contreras, Mrs. Marsha Craig, Ms. Emily Hall and the entire PE Department all whom were instrumental in ensuring proper facility accommodations. The administration of the test was seamless with the support of our proctoring team: Mrs. Monica Adrian, Mrs. Elizabeth Clark, Mr. Jeff Clark, Mrs. Teresa Lujan-Ferkel, Mrs. Mujde Pidduck, Mr. Brian McCauley, Mrs. Molly Fitch, Mrs. Santa Coria, Ms. Ethel Alfaro, Mr. Varre Cummins and Mrs. Dominique Rousseau.
Channel Islands High School is looking forward to the many opportunities our test-takers will have thanks to the efforts of the PSAT team!

Peer Resource – Jenna Bernard
Ok, our Peer Resource program has grown so much that we are taking almost 50 students to our Peer Training Camp! I am so looking forward to all the services we will be able to provide on campus when we return! I have set VERY high expectations this year for our Peers. We currently are the largest and most active Peer Program in the district, and our students are very committed to becoming TRUE student leaders.

This event is a lot of fun and encouraging watching how hard these kids work to become Student Leaders! We also blow off a lot of steam on the confidence building Ropes Course on Wednesday.... you can get paid to climb a tree!

The Migrant parent meetings are usually on the second Thursday of the Month. The next meeting is scheduled for November 12, at 6:30 in the Library. Our guest speaker then will be Juan Matus, Mexican Consulate. Please feel free to join us, everyone is welcome.

Words of Wisdom
In our RAP (Raider Advisory Period) classes at Channel Islands HS, we’ve been talking and thinking about Moral Courage and what it means for each of us. The following two quotes align themselves with moral courage in that they are about our “conscience” – that little voice that guides us to do or think about the right thing:

The first quote is from the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., and it states:

“Thou shalt not be a victim. Thou shalt not be a perpetrator. Above all, thou shalt not be a bystander.”

It’s easy to understand why we wouldn’t want to be a victim; and we know why we shouldn’t be the aggressor or the perpetrator of any heinous crimes…. But why is it “above all” that we shouldn’t be a bystander – a person observing what’s wrong and allowing it to continue? Think about the Holocaust and what occurred because very few (almost no one) was willing to take a stand against what was wrong. When we allow things to occur through silence, are we any different than the perpetrator?? Something to think about.

Athletics – Manny Lara
We are 5/0 on both Varsity and Junior Varsity. Friday’s Football game against Oxnard will be live radio, and live video! Also, immediately following the game on Friday night, we would like to invite you the fans, the coaches and the players out to Rusty’s Pizza for the live post-game party on the radio. We’ll be interviewing the coaches and players, and selecting the HFS player of the game.
Best of luck to you Friday. Ryan Miller CEO - Home Field Sports, Inc.

This Friday will a great night to be part of this community. We are expecting a big crowd representing both schools. (Let's not let the Yellow jacket staff outnumber us; many of OHS teachers and staff will be there!). CIHS staff and their friends and family are invited to sit adjacent to the Press box on the scoreboard side. If you want to make an announcement about a school or community program that you are involved in, write something up and we will read over the PA.

CI remains hot, reaches 5-0

The following is an excerpt of from the Ventura County Star:

Gary Porter barely had time to digest the Channel Islands football team’s fifth straight victory when he adeptly sidestepped an ice bath.

Winning is becoming contagious for Channel Islands.

The Raiders’ prolific offense passed one of its toughest tests this season with a 23-12 win over visiting Santa Paula and its stout defense.

“It feels great,” Porter said. “Tonight was a great test. That’s a really good team over there.”

The win sets up a tantalizing matchup next week for Channel Islands (5-0), who kick off Pacific View League play with a visit from Oxnard (4-1).

“We’ve been working hard,” running back Albert Leon said. “We just want to keep winning.”

Channel Islands offense made its usual impact, but it the Raiders defense made the decisive plays.

Santa Paula (3-2) pulled within one, 7-6, early in the second quarter on a 3-yard quarterback keeper by Kameron Klein. But on the first play of the Cardinals’ next possession, Chris Shea picked off the quarterback.

Channel Islands quarterback Bobby Diaz then found Jeremiah Valoaga, his favorite target on the night, for a 25-yard reception. Leon capped the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run for and a 14-6 Raiders lead.

The defense held again with Santa Paula marching downfield in the fourth quarter, only to see Klein stopped at the 14-yard line on fourth down.

Santa Paula had one last chance with three minutes left, but Gabriel Camacho picked off Klein’s pass.

Channel Island’s offense benefited from the reliable running of Leon and Richard Palmer.

Leon broke loose for a 63-yard touchdown run along the left sideline with 15 seconds left in the third quarter that featured a Reggie Bush-style dive into the end zone.

Leon ran for 135 yards on 17 carries.

“I don’t think anybody expected us to be able to run the ball the way we’ve been able to so far,” Porter said. “Albert Leon is a huge reason for that.”

Diaz, meanwhile, threw for 129 yards and Valoaga made six catches for 75 yards.

Santa Paula had a proficient drive to close out the second quarter with Klein finding Ivan Ledesma on three consecutive plays that culminated with a 19-yard touchdown reception.

But seven penalties for 55 yards and two interceptions hurt Santa Paula’s chances.

“We weren’t able to capitalize on our opportunities we had,” Santa Paula coach Teohua Sanchez said. “We’re still going to have our growing pains. We’re still young as a team, but they’re competing day in and day out. That’s all I can ask for this team.”
