PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
In addition to the great things you will read about below, I want to showcase a few of our more modest teachers in the great things they and their students are accomplishing. This past weekend, Dan Lucas and Sara Mutuku accompanied 22 MESA club members to a MESA competition at UCSB. The team of 22 students had 19 students who brought home 26 medals. The awards for our students were as follows: Individual Math Test: Jonathan Santiago - 2nd place Calculus, Leticia Cruz - 3rd place Calculus, Jan Aquino - 3rd place Pre Calc, and Roi Anthony Navarro - 2nd place Pre Calc. In Team Math Quest, we had a Calculus Sweep: Jonathan Santiago, Daniel Rios, Greg Rivera 1st place Calculus, Joe Liu, Grizelle Liobing, Eric Lee 2nd place Calculus, Phuong Nguyen, Christian Lao, Leticia Cruz 3rd place Calculus. In Team Algebra - Travis Brown, Andrew Gonzaga, Jan Aquino all received 1st place; in Team Pre Calc we had Ian Cahatol, Vince Labinpuno, Airalee Rivera for 1st place and Roi Anthony Navarro, Samantha Plete, and Julian Roque for 2nd place. In the Egg Drop competition, Phuong Nguyen, Christian Lao received 3rd Place; and in Speak Easy, Vince Labinpuno received 1st Place. All of these Students plus our 5 robotics teams will be going to the finals in Fresno on April 25, 2009. Thank you again to Dan Lucas and Sara Mutuku for your dedication to our students and here’s to much success at the Finals.

In the world of CSF – please note that CSF Advisor (and math teacher extraordinaire) Terrie Romines will be hosting the South Central Regional CSF conference here at Channel Islands on Saturday, April 25, 2009. At this conference of over 100 schools, a total of only 10 students will serve as Seymour Finalists and will then compete for the title of Seymour Memorial Award Winner. Each school may submit two students from the South Central Region to qualify as Seymour Finalists. Join me as I congratulate Ms. Romines and her TWO students – Armi Agor and Grizelle Liobing – for being chosen as Seymour Finalists. This is truly an honor for our students, our advisor, our school and our community as we will have two Channel Islands High School students competing for this worthwhile and monumental award. This is the third time in CI’s history two students have been chosen and brings our total of Seymour Finalists up to 11 since 1995. Again, great big congratulations to our CSF advisor and students!!! Go Raiders!!

Lastly, in the world of academic competitions, please join me in congratulating our Knowledge Bowl team and their advisor, Sam Kochel, as they go head to head against other Ventura County schools answering a variety of questions ranging from calculus to world history to pop culture. Our record to date is 3 to 3 – having been victorious over St. Bonaventure and two of our sister schools – Pacifica High School and Hueneme High School. Last week the competition was at Buena High School and last night, it was at Oxnard High School. Next week, the competition will be held at Hueneme High School starting at 6:30 and I know your students would love it if you came out and watched for a little while. Let’s wish Mr. Kochel and his team of trivia and knowledge experts much success and lots of fun!!!

RAIDERS STAR PRESENTATION TEAM
On Monday, March 2, various classes were visited as presentations were made. This week's honorees are: Emily Aguilar, Campus Supervisor; David Haynes Science Biology Teacher, Water Polo Assistant Coach, Science Club Advisor; and John Grennan, English Teacher and Isle File Advisor.

The Raider Star Presentation Team for this week included our Principal, Bijou Beltran; Randy Ortiz; Susan Robles; Kenya Galdamez; Lita Hernandez, and Susan Yslas. As a thank you for their hard work each awardee was given either “Raider Bucks,” which can be redeemed for a cup of coffee, cocoa, or hot tea for a week or a Raider Lanyard. Congratulations to all!

Emily has been a campus supervisor for the last 8 years. Her favorite part of the Islands is lunch time. If a movie was to be made of her life she would like to have her eldest daughter play her part. And when growing up she imagined herself as her parents.

David Haynes is a Science teacher and has worked at CI for the past 8 years. His favorite part of the Islands is the Science Dept, football games and the rallies! If a movie was to be made of his life Will Smith should play his role. When he was a little boy he imagined himself as Lawrence of Arabia.
John Grennan teaches English and came to the Islands after having worked for 8 years in the newspaper business. He now is on his 14th year here at CI, and student spirit and personality is his favorite part of the Islands. If a movie was to be made of his life his students have told him he looks like Bob Sagat.

March is Women's History Month

March is Women's History Month and this year's theme is Women Taking the Lead to Save our Planet.

History of National Women's History Month

The Beginning
As recently as the 1970's, women's history was virtually an unknown topic in the K-12 curriculum or in general public consciousness. To address this situation, the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women initiated a "Women's History Week" celebration for 1978. We chose the week of March 8 to make International Women's Day the focal point of the observance. The activities that were held met with enthusiastic response, and within a few years dozens of schools planned special programs for Women's History Week, over one-hundred community women participated in the Community Resource Women Project, an annual "Real Woman" Essay Contest drew hundreds of entries, and we were staging a marvelous annual parade and program in downtown Santa Rosa, California.
