Welcome to Channel Islands High School
CIHS Mountain Bike Team

We currently have six students on the team.
Boys Girls
Luis Ramos (JV) Shaylee Quezada (JV); David Hernandez (JV) Mitze Vite (Frosh/Soph); Humberto Solorzano (Frosh/Soph); Robert Equihua (Frosh/Soph)

The first race was at Vail Lake on March 8, 2009. We had five students competing. The team took 2nd place overall. Shaylee rode away with 2nd place for JV girls.

The second race was at Warner Springs on March 22. Conditions were tough. When the girls race started, it was very windy and very cold. To our surprise it started raining a few minutes into the race. By the time Shaylee finished her first lap of the course, she was soaked and turning blue. Erik Kozin (coach) decided to pull her out of the race. Even so CIHS MBT finished 6th overall on that day.

The third race was this past Sunday at Lake Arrowhead (elevation of 5,000 ft.). This was Mitze’s first race and she did great. She took 4th for girls Frosh/Soph. Shaylee took 3rd for JV girls in this much more challenging course. Our boys also did great. Luis Ramos made the top 10 for this race and is 10th in the overall standings for JV. David Hernandez came in 11th and is 12th in the overall standings. The team moved up to 5th place in overall standings.

It is just amazing to see these kids at practice and at the races giving it their all. Most of them don’t even own a bike but had an interest in mountain biking. My husband, Alfredo (coach) and I (adviser) got involved because we love to bike and we are having a great time sharing our passion for bicycles with the students. They are also getting to see parts of Ventura County and California that they did not even know existed.

There are now several more students that are interested in joining the club but we are unable to take anymore students this year. The limiting factor is my van which has become the team vehicle. We would like to have another adult join us, preferably someone who could transport another 4 or more students and their bikes. If you are interested let me know.

We have one more race this season on May 3 at Santa Ynez. If you would like more info about the race, the league, results, pictures or anything else check out http://socaldirt.org/index.html.

A video is available of the first ever high school mountain bike race in southern California. March 8th at Vail Lake, CA..

At the very end you can see the team and coach Erick being interviewed!!!!

National Library Week / School Library Media Month
National Library Week will be observed April 12-18, 2009 with the theme, "Worlds connect @ your library®."

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries - school, public, academic and special - participate.

Many school libraries also celebrate the month of April as School Library Media Month sponsored by the American Association of School Librarians, a division of ALA, with the same theme as National Library Week. National Library Workers Day, celebrated the Tuesday of National Library Week (April 14, 2009), is a day for library staff, users, administrators and Friends groups to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers.

The Public Information Office of the American Library Associationcoordinates the promotion, placing articles in national media. Librarians, Friends and trustees of libraries join in sponsoring local promotions. Posters and other promotional materials are available through the ALA Graphics Catalog.

The ALA Public Awareness Committee assists in planning National Library Week and related activities. The committees hold open meetings at the ALA Annual Conference and Midwinter Meeting. Suggestions are welcome.

History

In the mid-1950s, research showed that Americans were spending less on books and more on radios, televisions and musical instruments Concerned that Americans were reading less, the ALA and the American Book Publishers formed a nonprofit citizens organization called the National Book Committee in 1954. The committee's goals were ambitious. They ranged from "encouraging people to read in their increasing leisure time" to "improving incomes and health" and "developing strong and happy family life."

In 1957, the committee developed a plan for National Library Week based on the idea that once people were motivated to read, they would support and use libraries. With the cooperation of ALA and with help from the Advertising Council, the first National Library Week was observed in 1958 with the theme "Wake Up and Read!"

National Library Week was observed again in 1959, and the ALA Council voted to continue the annual celebration. When the National Boo Committee disbanded in 1974, ALA assumed full sponsorship.

Dates

National Library Week is observed each year in April, generally the second full week.

FROM THE MIGRANT OFFICE

The Parent Project started on March 17 and is going strong. We have averaged about 50 parents per meeting. The focus is helping parents take control of their hard to reach kids. The instructors are a Police officer Sergio Figueroa and probation employee Carmen Flores. The classes are in Spanish. The meetings are Tuesdays from 6-9 pm in the Library and will continue until May 26. There is still time to attend or to refer some of the parents who have expressed this need.

ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT

CI's Academic Enrichment program took 50 students to Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks on March 19. The group of juniors and seniors learned about admissions, finances and campus life during a presentation in the university's chapel. After a delicious, all-you-can-eat buffet lunch in the student cafeteria, the Raiders split into two groups for a tour of campus that included a trip to the dorms, various classrooms, the student union, and the beautiful new sports facilities. In the new gymnasium, students saw plaques honoring CLU Hall of Famers, including CI's own assistant principal Mr. Sam Cvijanovich, a star football player for CLU in the 1970s.

Students were impressed with the park-like campus, the educational and extra-curricular programs offered, and, of course, the quality and quantity of the food. CI's Academic Enrichment program took 50 students to Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks on March 19.

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
In addition to all of the other wonderful things going on at Channel Islands High School – highlighted below – a proud and loud shout out goes to current 10th grader Kristian Dadacay for correctly solving the California Mathematics Council June 2008 newsletter –“ComMuniCator”. Kristian was Ms. Terrie Romines’ 9th grade student last year and submitted responses to the Student Problem posed in the June 2008 issue of the ComMuniCator. As we have just been notified in the March 2009 CMC ComMuniCator Kristian “solved the problem posed and found solutions with more than four possible integers.” Great job Kristian and great job Ms. Romines in helping CIHS students show off their knowledge!!
