Welcome to Channel Islands High School
Congratulations to OUHSD Winners in Statewide Speech & Debate

OUHSD administration, faculty and staff,

This past Saturday, OUHSD & VCOE co-hosted the 6th Annual Statewide Speech and Debate Tournament for migrant students, grades 5 – 12 at Oxnard High School.  On behalf of the VCOE Special Populations Division and myself, I want to thank the administration, faculty and staff at Oxnard High for hosting this prestigious event on their campus.  Along with the 400 students from Ventura County, we had an additional 500 competitors join us from throughout the State.

I am pleased to announce that OUHSD had individuals who placed in the speech competition in the English or Spanish division from CIHS, FHS & PHS.

In the Spanish Debate, it was a sweep for OUHSD!  First time competitors and 3rd place, Pacifica High School; State runner up, Channel Islands High School; and the State Champions, Rio Mesa High School.  This year we did not have a team place in the English Debate.

Please congratulate the coaches from your school site and ask them for additional details as to who competed and how they did.

Coaches:

            FHS- Kim Dallape

HHS- David Ramos & Esther Ultreras

KUDOS to Channel Islands for CSF

This past Saturday, Terrie Romines and her wonderful CSF students coordinated and held the CSF South Central Regional Spring Conference along with the help of CIHS faculty – current and retired!!  This event was extremely successful and truly allowed Channel Islands High School to shine.  Genuine compliments flowed from all of the CJSF and CSF advisors, parents, and judges regarding the poise of our CSF students, the generosity of time and love of our students as exhibited by our staff’s willingness to “give up a Saturday,” the energetic performances of our very own award-winning Banners, Drill, Short Flags, Co-Ed Dance, Brian Ramirez, Concert Band and Sabor Latino, and the overall Channel Islands High School pride!!!

A BIG THANK YOU goes out to EVERYONE who helped make Saturday’s event possible starting off with Mrs. Terrie Romines for hours, weeks, and months of preparation, and all of her CSF students for taking charge and confidently “running” the day’s events, especially Julian Roque (give him a “mike” and he’ll wow you with his poise and presence!!), Vince Labinpuno and Ryan Gonzales (who very much liked utilizing the “radios” to get things done).  Helping Mrs. Romines and her CSF students were the following educators who gave of themselves to make Saturday a very special day:  Ms. Darlene Johnson (who sang the National Anthem beautifully and danced a special Hawaiian dance in honor of the CSF Seymour Finalists), Mr. Brett Zielsdorf, Mr. Jose Hernandez, Ms. Marsha Craig, Ms. Brianna Davis, Ms. Lauri Markson, Mr. David Haynes, Mr. Loreto Teruel, Ms. Imelda Blanc, Ms. DeeDee Manzano, Ms. Evie Arellano, and Ms. Elzbieta Dabrowska, as well as all of the staff, individuals, and community members who contributed to the success of the event:  Drumline Revolution, United States Navy’s Color Guard, Kathy Matthews, Sue Baier, CIHS Track Team, CIHS ASB, Blackstock Junior High’s CJSF, Irene Sy and Lee May Little, VCCAA – Ventura County Chinese Language School, Shannon Klemann, Kim Visser, Phyra Prum, Virgil Cardinez, Mylinh Sajor and family, John Grennan, Lita Hernandez, Dustin Duran, CIHS Math Department, Susan Robles, Randy Ortiz, and anyone else I may have missed!!!

As visitor after visitor came up to me on Saturday gushing about our students, our staff, our school, I thanked them for their kind words and agreed that we have an exceptional staff and great students here at Channel Islands High School.  Congratulations to each and every one of you who chooses to make a difference in the lives of our students and our community!!

Thank you again to Mrs. Romines for agreeing to host this event and allowing Channel Islands High School to shine!!

CSF Thanks You
A little over a year ago CIHS CSF was given the task of hosting the South Central Regional Spring Conference on Saturday April 25, 2009. A daunting task, that we knew we couldn't achieve alone. You may remember we asked for your help last fall. Saturday was a success because you shared with us; your skills, your talents, your time and your equipment. You gave us; cash, food, drinks, posters, flowers, balloons and door prizes. The simple fact is you gave to us from you heart, and CSF loves you for it, we will always be grateful.

As anyone who helped on Saturday can attest, the conference attendees could not stop paying us compliments. Three of my favorites were:

"I have attended 5 Spring Conferences for the last 14 years, and never have I seen such a great conference" -Margaret Shoukry, CSF South Central Vice President

"This spring I have attended all the Spring Conferences, and those schools did a good job, but this conference was EXCEPTIONAL!" -Balfour Representative

"I am a retired teacher from Palos Verdes High School, you did such a fabulous job today, if I were to ever teach again, I would want to work at this school" -Mr. Willoughby

As you can see CI CSF truly shined, which I must admit was our goal, but it couldn't have happened with out all your support. So, CSF humbly thanks everyone who supported us on Saturday.

Sincerely,
Terrie Romines and the CSF kids

Santa Barbara City College for THE RESCUE

I'd like extend a formal invitation for you to join us (as a participant, not a chaperone) this Saturday, April 25 at Santa Barbara City (Community?) College for THE RESCUE. The idea is that we are going to "abduct" our selves to stand in solidarity with those children in East-Central Africa who have been abducted and held captive by Joseph Kony and the LRA. To date there have been over 30,000  abductions and it is believed that there are currently 3000-5000 children being held.

There are close to 100,000 people in 100 cities, 9 countries signed up to attend...We will stay on the West Campus Lawn at SBCC until we are "rescued" by a political Figure or a Media Mogul/Celebrity. (The list of possible SB "rescuers" includes Senators Boxer and Feinstein, Rep Capps, Mayor of SB, Surfing Pro Kelly Slater, Musician Kenny Loggins, Oprah Winfrey and other Hollywood stars) Activities for the day include a Speaker who is a former Child Soldier, letter writing/ phone calling and other general civil protest stuff. There will also be a Music/Art festival with crafts, food, marketplace items etc...

There will be a lot to do/see and it should all be very exciting...Everything starts at 2pm and ends around midnight.
