“Creating opportunities for our students to be successful while removing barriers of failure.” Raider Friday Update
“Where we expect success and nothing less”
ACADEMICS
Math Department: Terrie Romines: The Geometry Honors have created works of art using Geometry and will be hosting an Art Show in room 19 during Back to School Night on October 1st and everyone is welcome.
ACTIVITIES Randolph J. Ortiz: The Distinguished Hispanic Speaker series got off to a great start on Monday September 21st, with our first guest speaker, Andres Herrera, Oxnard’s Mayor Pro Tem. Our students were inspired by Mr. Herrera’s personal struggles to pursue excellence and his dogged determination to succeed in academics and athletics. He reminded the students that poverty is not a reason to fail. Poverty of the mind is the first obstacle you must overcome. Mr. Herrera was once our booster club president and replied that it felt like a homecoming being asked to speak to the students at Channel Islands High School. Many of his younger brothers played and starred in our sports program. His message reinforced the message expressed by Principal Bijou Beltran, “you can do it, and your teachers and community will not give up on you!” Mr. Herrera finished his 45 minute speech by offering his personal support for all our students here at the Islands and told the audience, “you can call me at my office any time and I am willing to help.”
Raiders Football Spirit Sign: On Friday, September 25th, before the Varsity football game, we will re-introduce the Raiders football tradition of running under the goalpost and tapping the Raiders Football Spirit sign for good luck. Varsity football coach Gary Porter, wanted to revive this wonderful touchstone of the Raider’s football glory and with the help of Principal Bijou S. Beltran’s creation of the CIHS Heritage Society, we are able to “resurrect the great Raider’s Spirit.” The sign was redone and lovingly restored to glory by Channel Islands High School’s retired Art teacher, Audrey Rubin, who donated her time and artistic ability to help us uphold the dignity and sportsmanship of our past teams. Please join us for Friday’s home game for the exciting unveiling of the Raiders Football Spirit sign.
Renaissance Rally: The ASB Class put on a spectacular Renaissance Rally on Friday September 18th to kick off the school year! The focus of this school year is to increase test scores and achieve academically as well as athletically and this rally was right on target. Academics were honored at this rally, including the Top 10 from each class and this year's Valedictorian Candidate Ian Cahotol. They were the honored guests and seated on the stage at the forefront of the gym. Hanging were beautiful posters depicting characters from the Rugrats, this rally's theme, and nicely printed scrolls with names of the Top 40 from each class as well as all students who had a .5 grade point improvement. The CI Squads dazzled the crowd with vivid performances, but the teachers again stole the show. Their rendition of the Cha Cha Slide brought the packed crowd to their feet with cheering and clapping. In addition, all Fall Sports teams were announced and given recognition for their upcoming seasons. In all, the rally was a spirited beginning to what should be a dynamic school year.
Welcome Back Dance: On Friday Night September 18th, the ASB sponsored the annual Welcome Back Dance. To help support the football game vs. Santa Clara, students who showed their game ticket stub were allowed to enter the dance for FREE! Many students did indeed fill the gymnasium full of excitement after CI's football outstanding victory! Students with an ASB card were also allowed to enter Free of Charge, while others had to pay a $5 cover charge. Former CI student and Q104's DJ Relyt (Tyler Victorio) kept the crowd energized with his mix of music. The dance was full of energy and everyone ended the night having lots of fun.
Freshman Elections: CIHS ASB held the annual Freshman Class Officer's Election on Wednesday, September 16th, in the gymnasium. Each candidate was dressed to impress as they wowed the capacity crowd with their amazing speeches on how they would lead the Class of 2013 to new heights. All the candidates were worthy to win, but the following garnered the most votes:
President: Amanda Cuevas Vice Pres: Casey Victorio Treasurer: Primo Tiongco Secretary: Angela Francisco
Renaissance News – Sarah Eglitis: This week marked the official beginning of the new Raider Rewards program here at the Islands. Every teacher now has tickets to use in their classroom as incentive for improvement. Teachers recognize students who make positive changes with one of these tickets. Then, at the end of the semester, all of the tickets will be put together for a drawing. Students can win great prizes like a digital camera, Magic Mountain tickets, and gift cards to some awesome stores. This is our way of encouraging even the lowest performing students that making positive choices does have rewards!
TESTING Beginning September 21st, Channel Islands High School was the first high school in the district to conduct annual CELDT testing. With over 1000 students classified as EL (English Learners), we are the school with the largest number of students needing to be tested, and hopefully re-classified. Under the direction of Mr. Francisco “Paco” Reynoso, his assistant, Estrella Manriquez, and with the help of Assistant Principal, Consuelo Hernandez and myself, Mark Contreras, we are off to a great start this year. C.I.H.S. teachers Monica Adrian, Scott Bankert, Leticia Carabajal, Lauren Cavan, Mike Lee, Melody Linecker, Griselda Magallanes, Laurie Markson, Valerie Ochoa, Mujde Pidduck, Norma Salcido and Mylinh Sajor volunteered to be trained at the District Office and subsequently devoted extensive hours of both personal time (prep period), and days out of their classrooms to proctor the exams. With the assistance of the district testing teams, we were able to test 30 to 40 students in both room 90 and 92 (thank you Mr. Brett Zielsdorf) for an average of about 240 students tested per day. Wow. Thank you all for accommodating us by sending those students that received passes from your classes, and for helping them to get caught-up upon return.
PESA CLASSES Wednesday was a stunning kick off for our Parents Prepared classes, which aim to teach parents how to support the academic achievements of their students. Classes are taught in Spanish by Kenya Galdamez, CIHS counselor, and in English by Lauri Markson, English teacher. Despite the challenge of having standing room only, one enthusiastic parent succeeded in getting all of the parents to commit to coming to all eight classes. Parents in Mrs. Markson’s class reflected that they were impressed by the interactive nature of the class and that they also look forward to attending all sessions. Classes will take place on Wednesday nights from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. through November 18th in rooms 54 and 55.
Athletics Department/Manny Lara/Athletic Director FOOTBALL is 3-0: And our entire program is undefeated!!! Freshman are 2-0 after shutting out SC 24-0 on Thursday and JV is 3-0 with hard fought 14-7 win on Friday. Below is an excerpt from Saturday's paper about our boy's in the VC Star. Enjoy.
There are three big — make that, tall — problems for opponents of the Channel Islands High football team. In 6-foot-5 Jeremiah Valoaga, 6-4 Alfredo Raya and 6-3 Jorden Chambers, the Raiders have three players that would make a sizeable front line for most high school basketball teams much less wide receivers for a football team.
“Cornerbacks can’t guard them,” said Channel Islands quarterback Bobby Diaz. “I can throw high and they’ll catch it. I can throw low and they’ll get those too.”
Distributing the ball equally, Diaz completed 13 of 20 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown as Channel Islands defeated Santa Clara, 28-7, Friday night at home.
“We realized that we had the size difference,” said Channel Islands coach Gary Porter. “Those three have matured as receivers in the past year.” Valoaga caught five passes for 87 yards, Raya had three receptions for 43 yards and Chambers caught two passes for 39 yards and a TD.
The Raiders’ passing game helped open a running game that had been effectively contained by Santa Clara. Albert Leon scored on TD runs of 13 and 88 yards. Diaz added a 1-yard run. Channel Islands are 3-0 for the first time since 1990.
Boy’s Water polo was off to a great start last week with wins over Hueneme and Camarillo. Senior co-captains Jairo Camarena and Sean Simeon have done an excellent job leading a young squad and lighting up the scoreboard. |
